Specialization Course in

Systems Engineering Approach to EV Design

Course Overview:

This course introduces learners to systems engineering principles applied to electric vehicle (EV) design, emphasizing a holistic, integrated approach to architecture, component sizing, simulation, thermal management, and system integration. Participants will gain hands-on experience with modeling tools, system-level analysis, and verification & validation (V&V) frameworks, learning to design EVs as complex, multi-disciplinary systems. By combining theory with practical simulations, learners will develop the ability to optimize EV subsystems and ensure reliability, safety, and performance in real-world applications.

Course Objectives:

Understand EVs as complex systems and apply systems engineering principles.

Design EV system architecture including physical, functional, and communication layers.

Perform component sizing and selection based on drive cycles and performance requirements.

Model and simulate battery systems, motor controllers, and thermal management.

Integrate and analyze the entire powertrain system under various operating conditions.

Apply verification and validation techniques using MIL, SIL, HIL, and VIL frameworks.
