About the Course
This course covers the fundamentals of structural steel design from an industry standpoint. Each course topic covers details of various components of a project, which will roll up to the complete design of a fully integrated steel structure. This course exposes learners on the design of steel building elements for a typical building. This will also help in bridging the gap between the design of specific building components and the complete design of a steel structure. The examples and details provided in the course not only gives the learners an essential background on structural steel design, but also provides subject material that closely mirrors details and examples that occur in practice.
Course Objective
  • To understand the behavior of steel members as a structural element especially buckling, torsion and block shear
  • To identify the different sections to be adopted for various types of loadings
  • To comprehend the use of types of connections between structural steel members
  • To gain an understanding of plastic behavior of steel members buildings
Key Topics
Learning Outcomes
  • Comprehend the behavior of structural steel in forms of beams, built-up members, plate girders – buckling, slenderness, effective length
  • Carry out the design of various structural steel elements under different loading, adhering to the codal requirements, and validate the design with the preparation of a design spreadsheet
  • Design bolted and welded connections taking into account the shear lag, block shear effects
  • Understand the plastic behavior of steel members and its analysis under various configurations
