About the Course

The infrastructure driven economy with the construction of massive structures like Metro viaducts, bridges, high rise buildings and Special structures in any challenging soil or rock conditions demands proper insights to apply theories and analysis while selecting and designing their foundations.

This course on “Foundation Engineering Practices” has emphasis on the connection between theory and practice by covering a wide range of topics in foundation engineering from analyzing the soil to selection of foundation and design of foundations based on the project requirements, developed from L&T’s expertise in the field. This Course imparts knowledge on Practical aspects of soil investigation, tests carried out to find the design parameters required to analyze the bearing capacity, Various thumb rules and understandings based on the actual soil investigation report, Foundation selection criteria, Types of Shallow foundation types – Isolated footings, Combined footings & Raft, Design & constructability aspects of Deep Pile foundations, Earth pressure theories and retaining walls.

In addition to the above, case studies from real time construction projects are also explained to highlight the foundation selection criteria and design.

Course Objectives

The objective of the course is:

  • To impart knowledge on different classifications and investigation techniques of soil
  • To equip the learners with skills of geotechnical report writing and interpretation of soil reports.
  • To explain the different classification of foundations, earth pressure theories and explore the thumb rules in selection of foundation.
  • To explain the construction, design practices and challenges in execution of different types of foundations.
